Maternity Returning: Choices

If there were a bewildering number of choices pre-motherhood, post birth it can feel like it’s getting ridiculous. Where decisions were previously based primarily around yourself and perhaps you’re significant other; what town, job, house, what clothes, now you’ve been pitched into a bewildering array of decisions regarding the safest car seat, the best way of weaning, and most importantly the collection of elements that lead to a good nights sleep for everyone in the household. In the early days it can seem like a minor miracle that anyone even leaves the house!
The bad news is that all though the types of decisions will change (& you just wait until you get caught in the emotive trap of choosing school!), the intensity of making them is rarely diluted. The good news is that with all this practise, we do become more adept at holding the process.
So, that’s your parenting role, and practise makes perfect. Now when is there time for you? Have you lost sight of what you need? Whilst there is hardly time to decide on which shoes for yourself, things like which job or career path cannot go unattended for too long before the natural consequences of reduced engagement begin to show themselves. You may have found yourself changed by parenthood and thus your career needs must adjust.

If you are feeling overly frustrated or drained at work, these are perhaps signs that your chosen career path is no longer a good fit. Creating the time to evaluate your professional situation is as essential to your families wellbeing as it is to your own. Might it be time to measure where you are up to.
