Is it Possible & Ethical to Coach a Friend or Colleague?
Often I find my career transition services are engaged by people I have known in pervious professional capacities, or indeed, in other lives. These individuals approach me precisely because they DO know and trust me and that is something I wish to be able to honour. The healing that takes place in the space between client and the practitioner lies on the high quality and consistency of the relationship.
As with practitioners in any discipline, the foundation of safety and the establishing of trust begins with the contact. It is within the process of negotiating the basics of the contacts, the timings, and fees and learning styles, that the expectations of both parties are made overt and can thus be managed.
It is a human trait to assume that others view the world in the same way we do. This assumption is entirely erroneous and will lead to all sorts of conflicts if not addressed… Regularly! So whilst we may feel safe once the big contact is signed and sealed, it is in the soft contracting that the human subtleties are really deftly navigated….
It’s in the “so what are you bringing to me this session….” and in the seeking to clarify “is that the right word to use with you….” And the “what would you like to see happen now…..” That we really get deep down and dirty and explore the different meanings and echoes words and events have for the other.
This continuous checking-in with the client, in the endeavour to truly walk alongside them and see the world from their perspective, raises this work way up above any previous knowing or friendship. The journey is entirely theirs, and, to accompany them is a privilege.
