2 Ways to Choose a Career

As a career coach I have seen two ways of choosing a career. One is more successful than the other.

The first is to do as you’re told, it is to choose the options you were advised to do at school. To choose the degree your family felt would be good for you. It is to choose to work in the field where you are most ‘qualified’. It is to listen to others and observe The Rules.
The second way to choose a career is to choose to listen to yourself.
The people around me who both make most money and are happiest in their work now, are those people who ‘didn’t fit the system’ then. Because school wasn’t their learning style, because they would have been stifled on academia, because they would have wilted slaving for the corporate good, they had to strive to find their own way.
We can learn a lot from these individuals because much earlier than we who are “ok at most things”, they have had the courage to follow their own path.
These people will have listened to their own hearts, they will know their core values and what sustains them through the dark hours. They will have honoured themselves by doing the thing they really are passionate about. They will have taken risks and probably also learned that a failure is not the end of the world. They will know that it is courage and resilience, the learning and agility on the journey that is important.
They will have learned the a slight tweak or nudge here and there can bring a floundering idea right to the surface of success.
So for those of you who took the first career choice, and this is probably a majority of us, I’m just wondering if you are you beginning to feel there might be something missing?
