Best Laid Plans.

Sometimes ‘it’ just doesn’t work out as you had planned. At the time this can feel like a disaster. With hindsight however it can become clear that had ‘it’ come to fruition, it wouldn’t actually have the best route anyhow….

They do say that when one door closes another opens, but when the job you have chosen,  applied for and imagined for yourself, gets passed to someone else…. It rarely feels like an opportunity!

Once i was especially selected from the sales team to work on a new project. Somehow, due to company politics,  the entire prospect dissolved before my very eyes. I was however so very outraged that I applied for another job elsewhere and got it. As a team leader for the Prince’s Trust believe me I had a whole heap of fun and this was, unbeknownst to me, the beginning of my training and development career.

In hindsight I would not have lasted long in that sales environment however ‘special’ my new project had been for the simple reason that I did not really care for the work I was doing.

Working with underprivileged young people helped me to identify the core values I hold dear. I need to do work that enables and empowers people. Selling gas in the newly deregulated market was never going to meet that need on me…

So what am I saying? I suppose I’m drawing your attention to the bigger picture. To the possibility that an immediate ‘failure’ might be a future success. Either which way you will surely learn something very important in the process…….
