Career Coaching —Job Description
Have you ever got into the interview room and thought, “this isn’t the job I applied for” — a nasty feeling, AND this is surprisingly common.
.
There are reasons for these discrepancies:
.
The job may have changed since its inception: The role may have evolved over time but an old job spec has been advertised.
There may be communication challenges between the hiring manager and the recruiters or HR department and the role may have been lost in translation.
“Title Suppression” is also a thing. Official job titles may be kept lower to avoid paying higher market salaries.
.
So, what you see when you are job searching and the real role may indeed be two different things …

This is your valuable time you are investing in the application process. How do you know it’s worth it?

There are a variety of things you might look for when searching for your next role:

Career Coaching — Job Description

If you are seeing mismatched Levelling vs. Experience in the job spec; Strategic or Leadership Scope Under a tactical title; “Sole Practitioner” responsibilities; or cross-functional ownership… Ambiguous or Flat job titles also, intentionally or otherwise, mask or ‘miss’ the real role you are applying for.

And I would also suggest being really clear about WHAT YOU BRING: This is where YOUR Power lies.

Being clear about your capabilities, professionalism, and “Purpose” is essential. When you know what you want to do and when you know your “Why”, it is much easier to sense where the mismatches are between You, the role and the communication style.
.
It all becomes intuitive when you are seeing the situation from inside YOUR reality. This way you can avoid that unwanted moment of thinking:  “This isn’t the job I applied for”
