Career Coach London
Career Coach London: When I provide coaching or supervision remotely, I am often struck by the need both practitioner and client to Set The Scene. Literally, each phone conversation or Skype session will begin with a description of the environment in which each of us sits. As the British begin with the weather as a means of establishing some kind of ‘commonality’, whether we are in London, Bristol or Berlin, it seems each of us needs to describe what we can see from the window and whether it is cool or warm.
This is so congruent with the logical levels we explore in the career coaching process. Whilst I am helping clients to navigate their professional environments, their actions, their abilities and expertise. Whilst we explore their thoughts around themselves and their careers, their professional personality, and the purpose behind their passion. None of this can be performed without clarity with the layer below.
The definition of environment is wide. It can be geographical location. It can also be the decisions between urban and rural. If you need to see green then inner city ain’t gonna feed your soul and your work will be impacted. If you find yourself resentful in an organisation with a traditional hierarchy, you may need to choose the flat(ter) management style of a young and dynamic organisation. Environment can also be the freedom, responsiveness and agility that come with self employment. Environment is what you choose to define it as: Disruptive or dynamic ? Enduring or agile? Highly lucrative or values-led? Top-down or grass roots led? Identify what environment feeds you and your enjoyment of work will be reflected in its quality.
We absolutely need to establish whether we are are career coaching London, Orleans or Edinburgh. Without endeavouring to understand each other’s environments, coach and client find it difficult to work together. Similarly when we have not yet defined or understood which environment brings out our best professional selves, them we cannot design the next bit. Like with Maslow’s ‘hierarchy if needs’, you cannot skip to ‘self-actualisation’ until you have met your ‘biological and psychological’ needs. Engage with choosing your environment first and then, and only then, build upon this with meeting your more complex professional needs. This creates a solid professional platform and ensures that all your ensuing decisions are aligned and strong. How well does your working environment suit you? I’d love to know.
