Before the pandemic, this wouldnt have even been a question for most people. Before Covid we mostly assumed we would be working in person. Five years on, however, coaching can feel like a very different creature.

There are pros and cons to both being local and being global. — Being in the same country, the same city, leads to a common understanding that needs no translation.

Equally, it is EXACTLY these circumstances can lead to “assumptions” and the work then lies in being really clear about shared understanding. Assumptions that “we are the same” can lead to very wrong turns.

Conversely, working at a great distance brings a dynamism to the coaching dance like no other. — And here again we enter the risky zone of assumptions because what might mean one thing to you, linguistically, emotionally, culturally, might mean another thing entirely here to me…

All that heady connection could be built on a total misunderstanding – the same word can mean a totally different thing here in Bristol than what you mean by saying EXACTLY the same thing in Perth.

So, when it comes down to it, Whether its the same city or the same planet, it makes very little difference if the coaching relationship is strong. This is a true therapeutic relationship: The “rupture and repair” that makes relationships, communications, and trust grow strong over time.
