There was perhaps an over-use of of psychometrics in the 80’s and 90’s, and these have left people wary and rightly so! No ‘metric’ can take into account all your life experiences and beliefs or all your skills and hopes. These things provide guidelines only, and then we work from there.

The Myers-Briggs personality types for example, work well for me, because I have some trust in them. I first took the test when I was 22 years old, I took it again at 29, I have taken it in my 30s and 40s (not obsessively I hasten to add, but because it was required by this or that organisation). My ‘type’ has remained the same each time. Now ,out of 16 possibilities, I think that across a couple of decades, and multitude of different business sectors, that is a ‘constant’ that works for me.

Equally, If you score as an ‘introvert‘, this does not not mean you will always behaving in an ‘introverted’ manner. Firstly there are many different ways in which introversion can manifest. A ‘sociable introvert’ may appear to be an extrovert because they flourish at a party, and, nobody sees them when they retreat to shut the world out in order to replenish. Equally a quieter introvert, who finds the idea of a party some kind of hell on earth, might, with a significant other, seem to wear all their thoughts on the outside and voice all that goes through their head. This way the introvert preference is responsive to context in different ways.  We can also move around all of the personality combinations according to need

As you can see, its complicated business ‘measuring’ human beings. These preferences can form part of our starting point. Just because you prefer to withdraw in order to find your answers inside of your own psyche, doesn’t mean that you will not seek others opinions or expertise when you need to. The purpose of our working alliance is to work out when your preference serves you in your CPD and what will trigger you to meet your needs a different way.  This is a deep journey that will enable you to understand and play to the strength of the holistic you. All career coaching assessment tools deserve to be taken with a pinch of salt. Many Career coaching assessment tools do have some value, when they are used appropriately and in context.
