Decision-Making.

Career Coaching: Decision-Making. There is a little lecture I find myself giving my coaching clients sometimes. It goes something like this: “if, when you ask yourself what you want, and you answer with ‘I don’t know’ you are giving your power away. You are giving your power away because if you don’t decide your next move, someone else will decide it for you”. There is usually an uncomfortable silence after I have voiced this. Then people begin to understand what those words mean.

It is true, we often don’t feel like we do know what we want or what the next step is. Why is that? It’s because we are blocking ourselves form hearing ourselves.

There are multitudes of reasons that we might not allow our real desires not to be heard. It might not have been safe when you were small. It might be that you are full of other people’s expectations and agenda that ‘You’ is hidden beneath layers of other’s beliefs. It might be that you don’t feel like you deserve to do things you own way. It might feel like it’s a huge responsibility to do what you want as then you have to make it work. Whatever is getting in your way, here’s an exercise that might enable you to catch yourself off-guard and access yourself without too much trauma
Find someone who will hold you accountable and with whom you can share this exercise:

Career Coaching: Decision-Making

Grab a big piece of paper and some coloured pens. Put your question in the middle. Then, force yourself to generate 25 possible answers to you question. Here’s the important rule. 1) the answers do not have to be 1) right 2) serious 3) realisable 4) and you never ever have to do any of them. You might well ask ‘what is that point in doing it then?’ The point is to take away all the barriers that would stop being really creative. The point is, that somewhere with what you have generated, there might just be your ‘true’.
How many times have you Said the words, ‘I don’t know what I want’ and, as I result, ended up doing what someone else had wanted? And how many times have you resented that? Just saying…
