Career Coaching: Seasons Greetings. if you find it difficult to contemplate your next career move right now don’t be surprised. You might find your lack of motivation bemusing if you are unhappy in your current role. There is a reason for this. Your lack of motivation may not be due to the Christmas run-up. Your lack of motivation is probably due to the fact that most forms of life are going dormant here in the Western Hemisphere.
It’s hibernating time and us humans are not exempt. With long nights, dark days, we too are literally pulled to go dormant. It is time to make time to reflect as winter surrounds us. The conflict and confusion arise when we resist and believe we are exempt from this natural cycle. I messaged a friend the other day with these words; “I have a strong pull to behave like a dormant bulb and surround myself with warm dark earth. Simultaneously society demands that I perform for work, friends, and family, all of whom I love’. That conflict can trouble us. With bright lights, work demands and social events all pulling us we can feel stretched.
Career Coaching: Seasons Greetings
The wheel of the year and the cycle of gestalt have parallels. We have got into the habit of skipping the reflective phases of both things. When we have been all the cycle of initiating, planning and implementing a project, we skip through reflecting and celebrating phases. That means that we begin the next Project undernourished. Your nourishment will be found in the reflection and celebration of each project or year.
The Gestalt Cycle of Learning
Humans have learned to stay in the ‘doing’ and not the “being”. Winter is the ‘being’ bit for all us mammals. Looking at our Christmas habits all we are doing preparing to hunker down. You are gathering enough food, your best people and some little reminders that the light will soon return. That means that you can shut the door and be safe for a bit.
The purpose of winter is to celebrate all we have achieved in the year and to reflect on that which we want next. Winter is time to take the nourishment from the previous months of the year. Why would our professional worlds not mirror that? This is just a little reminder to you to take your time. Sure, your current role might not be a perfect fit. Try “The Human Being” approach and resist “The Human Doing”, just for a little while. Celebrate all that has been done and then see what emerges.
