Employment Exchange
Employment Exchange:
noun: British a former name for employment office
has a very different meaning for me today. Employment exchange simply means that I need to work in a time and place where there is the possibility of literally exchanging one job for another. The inference I take from this is that my whole twenties were not a total waste of time. I was not ‘failing to commit’, as I ping-pinged between roles, organisations and industry sectors. What I was actually seeking was some flipping diversity in my work.
Those who can exchange employment-hats can be very valuable in SMOs. We are especially well equipped for the entrepreneurial route. There is nothing like owning your own business to stretch your skills in a multitude directions. Life can seem like a series of alarms, set on my phone, the task being to identify which hat I shall be wearing next. Am I coach or supervisor? Am I the finance, the legal or the marketing department? Am I in publicity, contacting or admin for the next hour? I do as is necessary and all my skills grow with the practise.
Having the need for employment diversity also means a need or employment responsibility. Whilst I absolutely know that I need the fluidity within which to move between roles, I also need to design the structure within which this employment exchange of mine can work. Personally I would mostly choose working with clients over attending to my financial status. Sometime I just need to schedule some ‘sit down with excel’ time and do it. The structure holds the balance, the balance enables the fluidity. The fluidity holds my professional interest! Design your professional world your own way and see just how well this can work for you.
