Maternity Returning: What will you need?

Working with clients I often hear that whilst moving into the world of motherhood was a profound process, moving back out into the world of work was not so easy either. This was certainly echoed in my world. Returning to work brought up a whole heap of new challenges.

Some of the issues women face are pragmatic. We simply can no longer be at the beck & call of ‘the corporation’ because we are already needed by our small person at home. How will you negotiate and manage your hours.

Some of the challenges are ethical; our priorities shift through the motherhood transition. Having worked all the hours the goddess sent before we procreated, suddenly we may not actually want to do this anymore. Whilst our professional independence is invaluable, perhaps you will be questioning whether they do really deserve your hearts and your soul?

And will your job be the same? Flexible hours sometimes brings consequences regarding our level of responsibility, our professional development, and, especially of future advancements. Sadly, our society does not always support women who choose to go ‘off ramp’ in order to have children. So what is it that you will need in order to navigate your professional re-launch?
