Return to Centre
It seems it is not being centred at all times that is the measure of our wellbeing, but the swiftness with which we return. This is a total misquote of a Buddhist saying, but for me it holds a resonance.
We design and choose our way of being according to need and to the information we have at the time. We then tend to stick to these ways, even when they no longer serve us. We grow and change. Our circumstances shift. The wider world is continuously in flux, and the trick is perhaps to notice when one of our ways of being no longer works for us.
Actually I do not wish to be the kind of individual that is never touched by another’s pain. I want to be moved out of my centre when I see and sense bruising things in the world. This is why I coach well. I care. I also need to be able to move myself right back to my centre in order to become potent once again. I cannot grieve another’s loss for her. I can hold the space whilst she journeys through it.
Similarly it’s often an external sign that I see they nudges me into noticing that I need to rebalance. My finances may suddenly look wonky, my business admin unmanageable, or my domestic bliss (!), is suddenly disrupted by a 5 year old misbehaving and this very clearly indication that something is not working for him. These are the symptoms.
The trick is to notice and to choose to act. To notice and take time to measure what is not lining up or what is out of kilter? And to choose the way to attend to it. Do the same thing over and over, and you really will get the same outcome over … and ….over…..
So attend to these symptoms. It may not take a huge change. It may be a nudge here or a tweak there and then everything lines right up again. Maybe take time to check over the spreadsheets, tackle to to-do list, or really give the small boy attention and see balance is regained.
Do the things that return you to your centre as soon as you see the symptoms and you’ll be free to return to centre where you are most potent.
