The Big Career Question:

The biggest question I encounter in work as a career career coach is ‘can I really make my living doing what I love?’. And the short answer is ‘Yes’.

          This answer is also the long answer too because it is dependent on a sequence of decisions and structured steps. I believe it is entirely possible for everyone to make a good living doing what they love if the following things are taken into consideration:

          Identifying your passion and being really specific about its nature and its value.

          Identifying and working with your inner saboteur: everyone has one.

          Creating a really strong vision that will hold you through the tough times.

          Identifying your personal strengths and vulnerabilities and working out how to use these to your advantage.

          Making the commitment to do whatever is necessary in the short term to make your choosen career path work. There will inevitably be sacrifices initially in pay level, time commitments, and regilar crises of confidence. Are you willing to support your vision with other part time work?

          Taking the time to identify your strategy and emergency contingencies. The resources you do have and these you will need to source.

          Being very clear about your measure of success! This will be unique to you & will be unlike anyone else’s. How will you know when you’ve ‘got there’?

         Ensuring you have accountability will be essential. Who will you be answerable to? Who will be your third eye and notice when you go off track. What are your timescales? Are you in control of your finances. Are you being driven by fear of failure rather than the love of what you want to do?

          And how will you sell the change you are choosing to those who love and depend upon you? Their lives will be changed by your choice too.

          Not much then! And of course there will always be the steps that you need to identify to enure your success that are unique to you……..

          But first things first, if you have taken the time to really explore the first action on this list then the next steps will fall much more readily into place for you. With this first piece of your journey in place, whatever the weather during your trip,  you will know ‘why’ you are putting yourself through this process. Being really clear about your purpose, increases your chances of success tenfold.
