What’s Stopping You?

Assertiveness: What I am noticing is that whilst career coaching clients can often assert themselves in their professional roles, they may not be able to do this so easily in their personal worlds. This too affects your career development.
In a place of work, or a profession, there are structures and protocols and base lines and ethical guidelines to adhere to. These ensure the safety and equality of customers and clients, the organisation or company and the employees. All good.  Where they cannot regulate is internally for individuals and this is where the disparities can begin.
“If you don’t ask you don’t get”
Is an age old adage, but, if your self belief is low and self perception is skewed, from what you are really capable of and what what you really deserve,  then you will begin to fall behind.
The interesting thing about these slightly slippery internal beliefs is that we are often unaware of them. The come from our families, our formative experiences and from society too. We may have internalised these beliefs of ourselves at such a young age that they appear to be part of who we are. But do they need to be?
You may begin to notice something is amiss when colleagues get promoted or are passed projects that don’t come your way. On one hand you cannot see they deserve them anymore than you do, but on the other hand, you might well feel envious……. And envy is a great motivator if we quit beating ourselves up for feeling it!
If you can see someone with a career path or a job or a passion that leaves you feeling envious then it is a sure indicator that you want something similar.
So my question would be ‘what is stopping you asking for it?’ What erroneous self belief can you now set down so that you can really do what you want to do?
