Better early than late?
Yep! I was early today. Not only was I a little early, I was a whole day early for my meeting….. I think there is a saying that goes something like this:
“Be early and you waste your own time, be late and waste the time of others”
That may be a slight misquote but I think it still contains the essence that I was attempting to convey… and I really do hate to be late for others because I find it infuriating if people are disrespectful enough to be late for me…. There are too many fabulous things to be doing in a day to be sitting around waiting for people who don’t show up!
So back to being early (and the accompanying stream of 4 letter words that accompanied my realisation….!), I had a choice. Be cross, sulk, take my bad mood to my next commitment. Alternatively I could make the most of that time i had gained. Oh, I choose to see my mistake not as a loss, but in terms of the time I had gained. All my work was up & together for the next day’s appointment. tick. In the present I suddenly had an extra hour in which to tackle other things. Double tick.
So that is what I did, I tackled the bottom of the inbox. I took the chance to delve into the bits I usually ignore…. I felt satisfaction in doing this too. Triple tick?
Even had there been no ‘devices’ which which to do this work, simply having a coffee, ‘out of time’ and pausing in the space in-between would have been equally, if not more valuable: for how often is it that we are unexpectedly gifted with an hour for our very own use?
So at risk of sounding smug (and there are of course exceptions!), maybe It’s not so much what happens to you in your life, but what you choose to do with it… Just a thought.
