Career Coach GPT: Why would you not use AI for career coaching? It’s cheap, accessible, and you can even do it in the middle of the night if you please …  However, while great for helping you to build your CV, it turns out that GPT and AI DO have limitations:

My FAVOURITE limitation is THIS:  “Data Bias & Hallucinations” –  AI provides confident and perfectly plausible outputs which are total fabrications. AI draws on information and memorises it, rather than understanding it. With ‘auto complete’, AI predicts the next most likely word as opposed to giving you ‘truth’.  AI can fabricate false academic citations, news stories or medical data. All of these pose significant risks to AI-generated information being taken at face value.

(btw During the last 15 years of my practise I have severely limited my hallucinations in my career coaching capacity. We need to work together in Ordinary Reality to achieve your professional ambitions.)

Many other essentials are also currently missing: 

AI doesn’t feel empathy: Career struggles are personal and emotional. AI cannot provide psychological support, encouragement, or a deep, nuanced understanding of common issues such as burnout or fear

AI knows nothing of your personal history, values, or career journey. This means responses will be generic or ‘middle-of-the-road’ advice compared to a human coach.

AI cannot deeply analyse complex career pivots, niche industries, or nuanced, tailored networking strategies – you’re on your own with this. 

Career Coach GPT

AI may struggle to recall or synthesise detailed personal development over a prolonged period. It is less effective for long-term career mentorship.

There is no professional responsibility or accountability when the AI provides bad advice or misses critical career red flags. No supervision is a dangerous thing. 

So go ahead, use AI to build your CV, for mock interviews, and for basic career research – It is a great tool. 

But maybe seek out a qualified, compassionate, human coach for significant career decisions
