Do You Believe the Sky is the Limit?

One step (or indeed jump!), at a time, the sky really is the limit for all of us. The problem is that we ourselves cannot see it. Those around us can see our beauty and our talents and our skills and our potential and our brilliance…..

Yet we view ourselves through distorted lenses. Our self beliefs are limited not only by our perceptions in the here an now, for example whether we have had enough sleep, or work is a drudge or whether we need lunch, but we also shoulder beliefs that do not serve us both from the past and from the context in which we live and work.

Using Gestalt as a model our authentic selves sit firmly in the middle between two other circles. There represent our pasts and our cultural contexts. Where each of these circles overlap with our ‘now” or authentic selves, then they can contaminate our self perception. These limiting beliefs can prevent us from even contemplating doing that which we really want to do, because we do not believe we are capable….This is not true of our today-Selves.

For example I had a colleague who had struggled with undiagnosed dyslexia at school for years. The beliefs she still carries is that she is a ‘bad’ communicator….. What the woman actually is in the here and now is an excellent communicator….

She has trained in BSL and works with the deaf and helps small people to learn to communicate and indeed one of the most intuitive and empathic people I have ever met.  So the ‘thing’ that was her vulnerability in the past has become her strength in the present. Once her self-belief caught up with her actions and she let go of an old, redundant limiting belief, the sky was indeed her limit and she flourishes and grows her professional reputation in leaps and bounds.

I see this pattern so often, the past’s vulnerability that becomes the present’s strength, once we can truly see ourselves in the now.
