Energy in Motion

In the realms of our professional and indeed our personal worlds, we all have feelings about things that happen and the way we interact with other people. In am noticing that the type of emotional response I have is less important than how I work with it.
On the guidance of an exceptionally talented therapist I worked with some decades ago, I began to view my emotions in a new way. He translated emotions into ‘energy in motion’. This rephrasing enabled my to handle them entirely differently (most of the time!).
Raised in a world where feelings were to be ignored or resisted or controlled, I had no idea of their value. The “grown up” way to handle emotions was to be firmly in control of them and never behave badly by revealing them or reacting.
What I now know is that there is a third choice.

Instead of suppressing or being overcome by emotions, I can notice them, and observe them. In this way I can listen and learn from them. I can also trust that with a few deep breaths, having noted what my emotional and physiological responses are telling me, I can let them move through me and let them go.
Much of the work I engage in with clients is this process of learning that it is safe to listen to feelings and to let them inform their next decision. Whether is is a result of our society, or whether it is the natural way of intelligent people, many clients have unknowingly retreated into their heads and play relentless games of mental ping-pong whilst they try to ‘think’ their way to an answer or decision.
What we easily forget is that our hearts, our gut responses, our tears or fury are trying to tell us something. Often we squash this valuable information & consequently we repeatedly exist in a place of psychological dissonance that loses us literally hours of sleep!
When this happens it’s time to get out of your head. It is time to find a way to make it safe for yourself to really listen to the language of your physical and your emotional world. Only this way will you find your true way for this is the whole of you working in harmony. Try observing  your emotions as ‘energy in motion’ and see just what you can learn.
