Maternity Returning: Appeasing Everyone?

If you are considering returning to work following having a baby, then you may be feeling there is much to be done to make everything fit into your world. It is a trait, especially of women, to try to make it right for everyone. Firstly this is because we care. We care about our friends, our partner, the quality of our work, and we are now inexorably pulled by caring for the new small, quite demanding, small person in your life.

Secondly as women we are conditioned to make everything right for others. Women are gently, subtly, profoundly expected to do the pre-planning, the adjusting, the negotiating, the fixing and the communicating to ensure all the pieces of the puzzle fall right into place. These are often referred to the soft-skills. And, because on the whole we are extremely good at it, we keep doing it.

Juggling perhaps a job and a home and a baby and a relationship and friendships and wider family is practically and emotionally tough work. Taking care of you is the ONLY way to do this sustainably.  Meeting your needs is essential before appeasing the needs of others.

So how high are you on you To-Do list?
