Short term pain?

Yep! The title gives it away. I spent a whole day on my email marketing campaign. I’ve never done this before because I have never needed to as recommendations are word of mouth in this game … But I thought I might benefit in some way if I did what others seem to be doing…..

Well, after spending a LOT of hours configuring my campaign with a well known email-primate, I did wonder if I could actually have more usefully spent my time sending individual and personalised messages to every single person I had ever met. Or indeed just opening my front door and hollering the words ‘anyone up for some career coaching?’ And waited to see if any passers by responded!

What I do recognise however is that I have created a valuable resource for the future. That List of contacts is a precious thing. These are people who have worked with and supported and believed in me in years past. Thus these people deserve respectful invitations to take a look at the work I do to see if there is any benefit to them. They certainly do not deserve ‘spam’ after all we have shared.

And I wonder at this as a metaphor for career development. Somehow I left school believing that there were three types of job I could have. Dr, teacher, train-driver and these three sizes must fit All. They didn’t fit me then and they don’t fit me now, several decades on.

Like a good email campaign, the crafting of a career is a complex and individual process. Taking the time to identify and harness our individual attributes, skills and passions is an intense piece of work, but, having done so, we can then reap the rewards.

With this information you will have created a good resource. In this way you can be clear about your career needs, desires and hopes, and set off sure footed in the direction you have chosen for yourself
