What IS Career Coaching?

I have clients approaching me now, aged 29, saying “I’m nearly thirty” and I still don’t know what I want to do with my career. They have panic flitting across their faces. These individuals feel they are failing.

I also have clients aged between 30 and fifty who are saying “There has to be more to my professional world than this”. There is a sense of purpose-seeking. They know they can work, they know they can earn, they now want to do so doing something with meaning and have no notion of how to go about this exploration.

I believe individuals need to be supported in order to the build the inner resilience to try, to risk and to fail; they need to feel strong and safe enough to be curious. It takes a certain level of practise to learn the benefits of taking risks and moving on whatever the outcome. Individuals deserve to know that there are ways of refining exactly what want to do instead of settling for second best. People sometimes need to learn to ask for help; This is what career coaching is:

Creating a space where we can challenge old ideas that no longer serve an individual’s developing professional identity. A place between us where we can identify internal beliefs that limit their career path possibilities. Collaborating to generate internal resilience and self-trust in order that clients can choose to design their career development in their own authentic way. As a career coach I enable individuals to capitalise on the really good quality education they received when students and the discipline itself was still at the heart of the university or school. Most importantly I enable people to claim their career path and do it their way.
