Your Many Professional Facets…..
One part of my job is helping people name their identities.
I find it fascinating that whenever I attend an event, be it social or business, the first question usually asked is ‘what do you do?“
On one level i get it. This is a nice unthreatening question that does not invade a stranger’s personal world.
On another level, this is a question that can dismiss a human that does not feel they are top of their game, or indeed volunteers, is a stay at home parent or has recently fallen foul of the cuts and lost their job entirely….. How can this question be answered with value?
Working with Dilts nurologiical levels I ask clients to list their identities. This inevitably begins with the job that they do, or those they have done, before we get real about ‘who’ these individuals are.
Daughter, father, sibling, nephew…. Leads to homeowner, neighbour, friend and consumer ….. Leads to human or healer or resolver of conflicts….
And before we know it we have 20 or 30 different facets of each person written before us…..
I used to think it was disingenuous to be a different person in differing company, but now I see that so long as we remain in touch with our core selves, it is natural and necessary to use different identities in differing situations.
All these roles and facets and aspects and strengths are what make you the individual that you are. The real skill is ‘knowing what they are and choosing to use them in the most effective combination for the situation…..
That’s what makes you really unique…..
