A Curious Career Coach
Why I do the work I do? I realise there are people in the world who are utterly incurious about other people. I know this because I am married to such an individual. My beloved has absolutely no interest in the motives of anyone. He doesn’t ask ‘why would they do that?’, he doesn’t want to know what anyone was thinking when they took a took a particular decision or what drove them to behave in such a way. His part of the human equation in to notice that a task was not completed and ask again.
I, on the other hand, am relentlessly (& probably aggravatingly!), curious! I am absolutely and endlessly fascinated by what people do and especially why. I love to question and to understand and to learn. I love to have my theories proven or disproven so that I can grasp the motivations of those I live and work with.
Why? Why is it that I am so driven to understand what makes people tick? What drives this in me? I think it is a desire to connect. I desire that fundamental connection with humans. Be it a shared recognition of some event in the street with a stranger by the momentary meeting of eyes, or the deeper relationship I build with a client, I want to connect with these humans and I do so by trying to understand their reactions to experience. If by understanding them I can trigger that individual into recognising their unique brilliance then that is a double win.
Why do I want to trigger that recognition in others? I think it’s because I am genuinely awed by others skills and talents. I believe it’s about joy. I find joy in enabling others to find joy in themselves. This joy means we no longer need to compete with each other. When we compete we can disempower everyone we come across in order that we can feel better about ourselves. When we actually feel enough joy and self-esteem to come from a place of appreciation of others, we no longer have and need to dilute anyone else’s. When everyone brings their own skills we are freed to do so then we can collaborate with ease. When we bring our best selves to a project, to our lives, to the world then brilliant things happen.
That’s my motive, my one of my Core Values is joy, I am relentlessly curious in search of joy, my joy and the joy of others. Do you know your core values? What do they bring to your world?
