Agility

Few professionals would admit that sneaking off for a snooze mid afternoon constitutes ‘agility’. Call it a ‘power nap’ however and you’re in a different realm. When one is early to rise AND late to usher the last client out through the door, you have to make the most of opportunities as they present themselves. This includes taking opportunities to rest.
Agility, both personally and professionally, is the ability to respond to what is required in the here and now. Personally I am a great one for making lists, getting satisfaction from ticking items off and even if adding unplanned completed items merely to have the satisfaction of getting to acknowledge that I did even more than I’d planned. How annoying is that!
It is also absolutely no use to anyone if there is a disaster. Things change and all the professional contracting in the world cannot compensate or prevent the unexpected. Whilst we can focus in order to identify as many potential pitfalls as possible. Nobody that I know can legislate fully for the future.
So when the client cancels, or the transport breaks, when the exhaustion takes over or the intervention is ineffective, who would you rather be with? The person who is rigorously sticking to the plan and blindly ticking off her list? Or would you rather be working with a human who knows exactly when to quit her preferred way of being, who can throw The Plan aside, who can read the ‘need’ right here and now, and who is agile, secure and creative enough to engage with the complex dance that is life!
