You can research, survey monkey, you can talk about it, have the best logo, get more qualified for it. You can improve your site and design the most effective marketing strategy. But … until you actually do it, you will never know if it is needed.

If you have a strong “Be Perfect” driver, this can have you prevaricating….it means you’ll set a whole heap of ‘shoulds’ in place before you’ll even launch. Beware, these might merely fear-based distraction tactics.

It is only when your product or service is out in the world that you can measure whether it is needed and how it needs to change. These iterations will come in response to real customers and real experience out in the world.

I never set out to be a career coach. I set out to coach, desperately wanting to know my niche and feeling terribly insecure about my lack of one. I coached despite this, I made myself available, I heard people’s stories, I shared the interventions I’d be taught, and I then I reviewed those clients who had showed up…

It was THEM, the market that helped me find my niche. I showed up and I responded to the need. What my clients needed was a service that helped them to harness all their experiences and to apply that to meaningful work in their future.  Had I met with or worked with no clients I would never, ever have found that out!

So risk it, go out there with your perceived need, with your hopes and your dreams and find the meeting place with reality. Be willing to refine and respond and iterate upon the place you began and this is how you will find your niche.

Stop thinking and questioning and re-qualifying and get out there and get ‘doing’. That is THE most important step you’ll ever take.
