Career Acclimatisation

As the seasons change I have been noticing how differently people respond to the evolving weather patterns. How well, or indeed badly we adjust to the new temperatures can be indicative of our professional agility too.
I got caught out for a whole week by Autumn. It having been warm in the early evening, I had chosen the next day’s outfit based on our Indian summer. Only to be shocked, several times over, by the chill in the early mornings……. I learned, albeit inelegantly!
Interestingly enough, now it has begun to rain, my husband refuses to go outside….. By wish I mean that he flatly refused to cover any distance further than that between the front door of the house and the car, and vise Versa at work. This will last the Autumn, winter and well into the spring if British weather behaves as we expect.
This is of course a valid adaptation to the circumstances. It may however have its limits….. Perhaps my beloved might not be using all his natural assets in this case. His waterproof skin or indeed just waterproofs might save petrol & time in this city’s traffic…..
Professionally we need adaptability too. Markets and funding consistently change, client base and customer needs also dictate shifts and changes. Work culture and indeed our own personal and professional development are also consistently in flux, and we need to be agile and adaptable enough to move fluidly as is required.
What provides this fluidity? It is knowledge, it is the combined knowledge of your own skill set with the environment it needs to work in. To know your own professional strengths and vulnerabilities are essential for facing change. It’s like knowing you are waterproof when the Autumn arrives, it’s handy to have prepared before the rain sets in…….
