Career Progression

Career Coaching: Progression. On the whole, there is little point for most individuals to be having career coaching before they reach their 30s. Why? Because there is probably not yet enough professional history for us to work with in order to define your future. There are of course exceptions to this rule, but they are the talented, and really self-aware creatures who have gone straight to the coal face and got their hands dirty, only to realise that things need to be done differently …
To benefit from this kind of coaching you need to know yourself and what does not work for you. If you have got to that place, whatever age you are, we can work out what does work for you in a professional context.

Career Coaching: Progression

One of the triggers I see for those in their 20s who seek help is when they have no opportunity for progression. If you are stuck in a career cul-de-sac, it can be very frustrating. If the rules of progression are unclear. If the focus seems to lie elsewhere in the business due to reactive as opposed to responsive seniors. If you can see that the business is inefficient and yet you have no input. If the business seems inauthentic and does not do what it says on the tin. If there is hypocrisy in the different layers of the business. Then you might need to accept that you will not be able to make much progress there…

but what to apply for? Well, the answer to that question might well lie in the very reasons that you are currently dissatisfied.

So, you might need to leave… but what to apply for? Well, the answer to that question might well lie in the very reasons that you are currently dissatisfied. If you make a list of all those things that you dislike about your current role, organisation or project. If you then turn all those things on their heads and state what it is that you want instead. Then you can begin to look for the role or organisation that CAN give you those things…
Then you can work out your own progression. These days career progression is rarely linear. Progression involves making choices, and the starting place for these choices can actually lie within the things you don’t like. Spin them and you’ll find out what it is you DO want. Who knew?
