Career Coaching: Upscaling
Career Coaching: Upscaling your career or business is exciting and upscaling is also a terrifying thing. So what’s the way to take good care of yourself whilst you take the next steps?
Humans usually need to be quite uncomfortable before they will make changes. People like to think that they welcome change and innovate. In reality, it is often the discomfort of boredom and lack of fulfillment, or it’s equal and opposite, total overwhelm, that triggers the need for a new role or business model.
That means there can be feelings of conflict. ‘Stay where I am’ is no longer tenable. ‘Take the next step’ is terrifying, and still, the balance always tips. Take that next step and staying in ‘Terrifying’ is not sustainable or fun. So here are some thoughts on working with fear to make upscaling more enjoyable.
Career Coaching: Upscaling
Firstly, break the necessary tasks into small ones. Don’t try to achieve the next until the first is complete. If it takes grabbing a big piece of paper and plotting out the big picture of your new business or new you, with lots of colours, then enjoy doing it. Then, create your to-do list and steadily work your way through it. Celebrate those wins.
Secondly, ask for help. It’s too easy to think we have to do this stuff alone. In reality, there will always be someone who has walked this way before you. Sure, your new professional iteration and your new business will be unique, what there will be are experts who can help facilitate for you. If you need PR, risk buying it in. If you need admin support, trial some VAs. Keeps asking questions until it feels right for you.
Thirdly, take your new vision of you, and collaborate with someone who has taken this kind of step before. Nobody can take this journey for you, however, it’s worth remembering that there is nothing new. Others will have taken their version of upscaling themselves, their business, their vision, well before you have. Good, secure, successful mentors are worth their weight in gold.
Lastly, remind yourself that there is a fine line between fear and excitement. Triggering yourself into excitement will ease this journey. Practice (and this does take discipline), imagining The Best Possible Case Scenario of the future. When your thoughts become future-based, drop the negative-bias, and instead connect with your potential. That triggers the chemicals that re-remind you of why you started this in the first place. This means it is joy and hope that pulls you towards your future.
It’s normal to have fears around taking new steps. Upscaling is exciting when you put some of these foundations in.
