Do You Have Self-Actualisation at Work?
This exploration of job satisfaction theory references Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. But, what does the pinnacle of ‘Self actualisation’ really mean? And what does to actually look like in work???
For me it means be of real service out in the world. For me this manifests in work as don’t undersell yourself. Why? Because if you really value the contribution you bring to the world through your work and, if you really know what purpose it serves, then you are potent. When you are potent you can make change. How do you know how good you are though?
Job Satisfaction: Theory & Practise
Yesterday I met a journalist who said; ‘the site is great but you are SO much better…’. Then I talked to a marketing person and discussed a possible course to attend. She immediately imagined that I was talking about involving myself in the design and provision of the university syllabus …….Sometimes I wonder if I am actually the same person they are seeing?
This is why no person is an island. Wc can exist in isolation but rarely can we flourish there. Left to our own devices will always undersell ourselves. We see an opportunity and we talk ourselves out of it. We do something amazing and refuse to be complemented on it. We have and idea and immediately dismiss it…. Is any of this sounding familiar?
Moving Professional Mountains
We need to surround ourselves with those who will mirror the different facets and talents of who we really are….This way we won’t undersell ourselves. Surround yourself with those whom you respect and who hold you in good heart. These are the people who will tell you when you have done well. These are the people you will have to listen to because you respect them too. If we value what we bring we can be potent. This way we can be of real service, of real use, out in the world. Self actualisation is simple: Know what you serve, Value what you bring. Give of your very best. Surround yourself with those who can enable you do to do those three things and you will be able to move professional mountains.
