No woman is an island

I have been reminded in the last few days just how important people are to me…. Whilst it ounds obvious, it is easy to forget just how much we need each other as we career chaotically through our busy every day lives, and that we cannot easily do this alone.

A Colleague with a cancer diagnosis reminded me that all we have is each other … Neither the Highest wages, nor the best professional status nor all the tea in China could subvert that news. And the loss of a very old and trusted friend, my cat, and the kindness shown to me by friends who care and neighbours who knew us both, & our 16 year bond, is more than heart warming….. And helps me feel held in my friendships and my community.

& my work is important to me precisely because it is about people. One of my roles is certainly to encourage people to do the very best they can professionally, but, the metrics are so important.

This work is not about being the most important, bestest, or highest earning individual. This work is about weighing up the best ways to bring an individual’s best self and unique talents in order that we can each ‘belong’ and contribute in the way that best serves us each and as a community.

Professional development is much more far reaching than it is given credit for. We all deserve to make a good living from doing work we love. And we can rarely do this alone. An authentic career path is less about the competition and more about our genuine contributions. This way we can complement each other.

No woman is an island…… And it is a thing of beauty to belong.
