Please Learn To Take a Compliment

It is very British to be unable to accept a compliment with any kind of grace. It is also very British to be unable to value our own skills for ourselves. We are in a bizarre catch 22 situation of not being able to hear how good we are because we don’t allow ourselves to feel good about ourselves….Somehow we need to interrupt this in order that we can be open to the opportunities that cone to us, in order that we can rightfully accept what we deserve.

How can we make this change? Well change always involves taking a new action, however small that might be.

Here I have two interventions that might help. Firstly, get into a habit of listing 5 things a night that you have five well. You can do this in secret of you wish or perhaps share it with your partner or spouse. It’s amazing what you will learn about each other’s lives! Equally, even if you engage with this practise secretly and silently, every single night, it will have a profound effect on the way you see yourself.

Secondly, when complimented by someone, learn to pause, to listen, to learn and to breathe it in. Learn to feel the feelings that arise as a result…. If you grin or feel tearful then you have allowed the compliment  in and it has hit its intended target, your heart.

What you will need to NOT do is bat bat compliment aside. How many times have you found yourself responding with ‘oh it’s just……’ And that is how we deflect the generosity that the other person offers us.

So if you must be very British about how you deal with a compliment, perhaps consider just how disrespectful or even rude it is to dismiss a compliment that is being offered to you in genuine appreciation and kindness? Might you ‘fake it to make it’ for the sake of good manners?

You will be amazed how much your self esteem will rise if you practise saying the words ‘thank you for saying that to me, I appreciate your thoughts’

Go on – practise! This will prepare you to make you receptive to all you deserve and are worth!
