Start From Right Where You Are:
Whilst this sounds like one of those blindingly obvious statements, it is amazing just how often we do not do so. Often when making a plan for the future, we actually start from where we would like to be or indeed the plan was where we believe we should be.
‘Should’ is an important word in this context. Often a ‘should’ can denote that the agenda belongs to someone else. It might be a expectation of our family, one belonging to our peers or one we have imbibed from society. ‘Should’ is rarely or own.
But where it is someone else’s agenda or indeed or own, we cannot make a plan from a place that we have only reached in our imagination.
We can only plot the next step towards our new career or business identity when we are present right here in the here and now. Why do we avoid this? Often precisely because we are not where we want to be and this is why we are plotting for the next bit. Often in this moment we are only too aware that we lack a skill or a competence and this we is why we are presently dissatisfied. Paradoxically it is only when we admit this ‘lack’ that we can address it.
So creating a little bit of safety in order to get a bit grounded and honest with yourself is the best place to begin a new plan. Where are you right now? what is not working? And just what is it that you need in order to move forward?
