Take what you need:

“Take what you need and leave the rest” is a message I heard years and years ago….. & now I am beginning to really know what that means for me.
I attended a networking meeting for the second time today. I was made extremely welcome. I had a great breakfast. I learned much about other business sectors and about myself.
Reflecting on whether to join this meeting permenantly I realised that I didn’t need to. Not that networking is not beneficial, but that for me, being (very!), human-curious and (mostly), confident, networking has become a totally natural process. I genuinely want to connect with and hear the life experiences of other people. This way relationships are easily established and whilst the initial connection is not business orientated, these trusted relationships often to lead to business referrals.
So I suddenly realised that I do not need that form of regulated and disciplined networking. I am actually doing just fine in connecting and business sharing without needing to rise at 5am once a week.
In no way do I dismiss the value of this kind of organisation. Different business sectors and different personalities have different needs. What I learned was that my business identity stood up well in that context, and, I walked away with a couple of really nice contacts with potential for the future, and the trust that in this case I could leave the rest.
It’s empowering to choose. It’s even more potent to know why.
