The Benefits of Persistence!

As someone who was an introverted child, my dad still screws his face up occasionally and says the words ‘but you were such a strong little thing’. I can sense that we had a perhaps a few confrontations whilst I was small.
Whilst this may have been a pain for my parents, once I have The Bit between my teeth as a grown-up, I am capable of really hanging on in there until I make it happen.
I now see this as a real strength. When asked last week why I thought ‘being a self employed coach would work’, and,  before I had time to vet even my language, let alone my tone, I found the words, “because so many people told me it wasn’t fxxking possible” tumbling out of my mouth. Whether that was a business-appropriate way of phrasing it, I now question, but my core authenticity sure showed and I got the contract. That tenacious ten year old that believes she can buck the trend, despite all the times she has been told ‘that ain’t gonna work’, will react every time.
It’s interesting for me to begin to trust this. I’m not sure that this persistence is always nourished amongst girls and young women in our society, but perhaps it should be? Looking at it logically, I only have a strong reaction when I have strong feelings about something. If I have strong feelings about a course of action or a career perhaps there is an element of ‘truth’ in what I am choosing and therefore good reason to care about it. Perhaps the almost perverse reaction is actually based in a very sound ‘knowing’ deep in me that cares that it can be done.
It has been proven that 25% of women in The Board leads to 100% increase in business turnover….. Perhaps if our education system and our culture could begin to value their strong, authentic women who are feisty and self-trusting enough to buck the trend and be persistent enough to hang on in there until they take their rightful place On The Board, then everyone would be richer for it?
