The Power of Denial

Working therapeutically, and, having processed a lot of my past, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that I am exempt from denial. Ha!
“You do know what you do not know”, is otherwise referred to as ‘unconscious incompetence’. When we move from this stage to knowing what we don’t know, or ‘conscious incompetence’, it can be a shock! It is only when we know what we do know that we can do something about it……
That stage prior to this is true ignorance, and whilst this remains a safe & comfortable space, it can truly be ‘bliss’. Then something happens or there is a growing discomfort that triggers us into questioning what is amiss. This way we are made curious and are moved to explore and examine our circumstances to locate our next move.
I speak of this process because a humongous windfall apple brought me out of unconscious incompetence today. When it happened I was really shocked that I could not previously see such an obvious cause.
I had been encouraged to created a ‘sand painting’ in order to identify and heal my resistances to a creative pathway I am about to embark upon. This process didn’t actually involve sand or indeed painting see http://navajopeople.org/navajo-sand-painting.htm for more information. But it does invite natural energies into your territory in order to transform or heal a situation.
There there I was, boundarying my territory at the bottom of my garden, setting my intention, carefully placing natural items to symbolise my identified resistances….. And on returning after a wild night, I found a blimmin great apple sitting right in the middle of my ‘painting’ and, as soon as I saw it I knew what it meant. Similarly as soon as I knew what it meant I couldn’t believe I hadn’t known it before…..
Having identified this MASSIVE resistance, I shall be interested to see how my journey transforms.
Whilst sometimes we believe we would rather not know such a big truth, it is only by knowing it that we can choose what exactly to do with it…… Sometimes when we are stuck we need to make some kind of intervention in order to identify just why that might be. I can read or theorise or talk about it as much as I like but sometimes it takes a formulae or a process or an action to locate the need. Only then can we invite the healing process so that we can move forward and be the best that we can be.
