Which Career?

When I recieved career guidance at school, aged 13, I felt even then that I should know what I wanted to do…… For the rest of my life! I sensed that I must choose the right GCSE options or else… Or else what? Or else I feared being stuck on an absolutely irrevocable career path. I had a Spence  that If I chose ‘wrongly’ now, that was it…. Forever!!!!

Now I know  that the emergence of an authentic career path will often be an organic process. There may well be a process of elimination, of roles tried on and discarded before a real thread is located and strengthened. In my opinion however, with the right joined-up support, perhaps this career gestation period need not be so isolating and frightening.
If we could be encouraged to identify and honour our own individual strengths early on, to know what we are bringing to new roles as we try them for size, and, to know what we take from them if they weren’t our best fit, then the refining process might be seen as “purposeful” and not as potential failure. The journey might seem enjoyable instead of confidence-corroding and we might feel enriched by our experiences instead of increasingly depleted and discouraged by further disappointment. We might just find what we really want to do a little bit faster and not be traumatised in the discovery process

This way our continuing professional development development might even be fun?
