Career Coach UK
Career Coach Uk: Whether I am coaching here in the UK, or overseas, I need to bear in mind that my experience is never the same as anyone else’s. However close together, or far apart we reside. I need to be really wary of making assumptions. This is the purpose of ‘Socratic questioning’. Wikipedia give this definition of the process:
“Socratic questioning (or Socratic maieutics)[1] is disciplined questioningthat can be used to pursue thought in many directions and for many purposes, including: to explore complex ideas, to get to the truth of things, to open up issues and problems, to uncover assumptions, to analyze concepts, to distinguish what we know from what we don’t know, to follow out logical implications of thought or to control the discussion. The key to distinguishing Socratic questioning from questioning per se is that Socratic questioning is systematic, disciplined, deep and usually focuses on fundamental concepts, principles, theories, issues or problems.”
The questions I ask are based in supposition that I, as the coach, know nothing, zero, zilch of the client sitting before me. It assumes I know nothing of their perception of the world. In this manner I can discover and align myself with my client’s ‘truth’. I can clear my own agenda for the period of time during which we collaborate.
What I learned as I qualified as a Clinical Supervisor, is that the more alike a practitioner and client are, the greater the chance of assumption. This is where I, as a white middle class woman, might easily ‘guess’ at the response of a fellow white middle class woman. Here too is where I might be entirely wrong. Once a misinformed assumption is made, it can skew the rest of our work together. These assumptions must be dissolved as swiftly as possible…. I must always remain curious about my clients ‘truth’.
So perhaps what I am noticing here is that it is more ‘risky’ to coach a Uk female of similar ethnicity to myself, than it is to career coach someone who is my exact opposite… Given a coachee from a different race, gender, or culture, It is actually likely that I will understand this client better than the client I ‘think I know’. This is because I will be working so much harder to understand the implications of the things we explore together if the client before me looks different. If my client looks ‘the same’, if career coach uk, then my awareness and my curiously must be so much higher.
We can never totally understand another’s perception of the world. I will however, always do my very best to be curious about the echoes and resonances and implications of another human experience. This way I can journey alongside my clients and see approach challenges from their perspective. Whether I Career coach uk or worldwide I must remain curious.
