Do You NEED a career coaching degree to practice? — In my (not so) humble opinion, what’s needed to practice is just that, PRACTICE!

So Yes! Get qualified — there are plenty of creatures calling themselves coaches with a weekend’s work of coaching certification — to begin with, a coach needs WAY more than this. — WHY? — Because it is only in learning the interventions and turning those interventions on themselves, that a “coach in the making” learns how transformative they can be — THIS is how a coach begins to understand the power they can wield and thus to wield it gently.

I spent a year qualifying, then, feeling inadequate, I enrolled on an MA. And then, still feeling inadequate, I trained as a clinical supervisor so I could support other practitioners . . .

Enough now! What I had actually already done to fund all this training was establish a very lovely, strong cohort of clients, and THEY were teaching me much more about coaching than any qualification ever can! What did I learn? Mostly, that when you take the lid off a human, you can never ever guarantee whether you will find.

Yes, there will be career coaching to be done, but OMG, will there be a whole heap of other things to line up beforehand? And this is the bit which keeps the coaching work dynamic and engaging.

So good coaches get qualified. Excellent coaches practice. They practise because they adore what they do, and they practise because they love this dance they do with people that enables them to become their best selves. And they practice, and they become exceptional at what they do in a way that no degree can ever teach.
