Career Coaching: I Hate My Current Role …

Clients often come to me saying these words:

“I hate my current role — what do I do next?”

Controversially, this coach’s answer to this question is “NOTHING” — And, that is the uncomfortable bit.

Do. Not. Do. Anything. Yet.

You see, the discomfort you currently sit in is, when used consensually and consciously, absolutely FULL of delicious information.

And, this is EXACTLY the bespoke information You need to make Your next good professional decision, FOR You.

WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY IS IMPORTANT — We have been programmed to make any discomfort we experience, go away as soon as possible. THIS IS ALSO IMPORTANT — That is of huge benefit to those who can make money out of us. When we try to fix our discomfort with retail therapy, or any other kind of consumption (alcohol, sex, drugs, et al) we are literally goldmines for others to plunder because these ‘fixes’ don’t make the problem go away. And thus, we simply need more of The Thing we are being sold, to keep the discomfort at bay.

This is US, allowing ourselves to be played, at our own expense.

What we also do in these moments is give our sovereignty away — HOWEVER, When instead we take a quarter-turn TOWARDS our discomfort, we can find THE GIFTS in it. That means we can learn from it and quit the insanity of repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
I spent the first 15 years of my career ‘running’ in this kind of way. Pinging from pillar to post, new project to new team to try and find my happy place, outside of me.
What I know now is that only by going inwards, by turning towards me, could I hear what worked for me, what didn’t, recognise the brilliances I bring and thus, locate myself in a profession that really worked for me.
So, I repeat, if you are discomforted by your professional situation — quit running. You will only repeat the same lesson all over again if you don’t face it now.

Instead, sit with it, find a really trusted ally or coach to sit with it with you. — There are REALLY constructive ways of harnessing the gifts of discomfort

The sooner you take this quarter turn towards yourself, the sooner you can allow your innate wisdom to guide you on your next step. And, your innate wisdom REALLY will guide you well, when you listen.
