Career Coaching Questions
Career Coaching Questions: Coaching is all about the curiosity. Coaching is all about the questions. The more questions I ask as a client the better. The more questions you answer as a client, the more clarity we have in the picture we create around your professional needs. Socratic Questioning is a fundamental technique within the career coaching process.
The Socratic Questioning Method can be viewed in its simplest form, as ‘playing the simpleton’, in order to challenge assumptions. If I bring all my life experiences to coaching, then I also bring a whole heap of assumption and unconscious bias to the work. If I approach each individual and their unique journey as if I know nothing of their sector and as if I have drawn no conclusions from their appearance, then I might get a glimpse of their truth.
Two people can work alongside each other, in the same environment in the same sector, and even be of a similar ethnicity, and yet they can still have totally different experiences and perceptions of that experience. This is because we are complex individuals. We have layers of past experiences and beliefs about the world which combined, are unlike those of any other person. We all see the world through our own unique lens.
There is a perception that in order to be a good coach you need to be industry specific. I believe exactly the opposite to be true. I believe that industry specific = Mentoring. I believe that industry neutral = Clarity of Coaching.
Of course nobody is truly “industry-neutral’. I have traversed my fair share of differing sectors in the refining of my career. With the journey comes a great deal of knowledge regarding how differing professional cultures can impact on individuals. What I need to be doing with a client with whom I share professional likeness, is to be setting my perceptions of this aside completely.
So this is how we gain a shared understanding of your professional needs. It is the career coaching questions that enable a truly collaborative approach to designing your next professional steps. In order to be of best service to the coaching process I need to leave my assumptions and my perceptions right at the door.
