Career Outcomes Matter
Career Outcomes Matter: Well they matter to me, and, the life outcome matter to this coach too. We believe that we humans have our lives in spearer compartments. Thanks to Descartes we believe that our brains are separate from our bodies and that our work is separate from out lives. When in fact whole we are whole human beings who live in a whole 24 hours that comprises of a multitude of different yet inter-related facets. When we think negatively then troubled things occur in our lives. Similarly when work causes us angst, it puts strain on our personal lives, and certainly on the level of fun we can manifest.
There are also crossovers between life and work and vice versa that can really serve us if we transferee them between our realms. It’s not just the usual ‘transferable skills‘ that can help us such as communication or mediation skills. It can be the real oddities that are perhaps are peculiar to just us, that can shift across. for example: I recognised that something I got in my work, was really missing at home. The time to really engage with another human gives me joy to do this at with my clients, so perhaps i could ring-fence the time to do that with my beloved too..? I had a colleague who was really adept at performing because she spent time envisaging just how it would feel when the performance was complete. Transferring that into her personal life, helped her to deal with social anxiety. This ‘sleight of brain’ helped things to flow and opened doors to experiences this individual had as yet been denied.
So there cross overs will always be there and if we can encourage the good to move form one facet of ourselves to another then we can have better lives. Our lives are not divided up into compartments. When life is good work is also good. Of course good career outcomes matter, but I am also interested in the good, authentic, holistic life outcomes overall.
