Holding the Tension

It is within the tensions or conflicts that we have not yet resolved that the most brilliant creative responses emerge…..
The difficulty lies in sitting with it. Unresolved situations are uncomfortable. We do not know what will happen. We do know there will be some change and change is challenging. We can feel unsafe and ungrounded and very unsure of ourselves and our circumstances.
Simultaneously we live in a society of quick-fixes. Our natural desire to fix things is groomed in order to raise others profits, as we frantically buy things to ameliorate our symptoms, emotions or disharmony.
So both internally and externally we are bombarded with the message that any kind of discomfort is intolerable or indeed ‘wrong’.
Sometimes we need to challenge these beliefs. Sometimes we need to sit with and really explore difficulty in order that we understand enough about it to choose the correct way forward.
Sometimes we do need to really acknowledge that our career is not as we’d hoped, that our business is not as profitable as we had envisioned or that our business partnership is either unhelpful or downright risky…. We need to unpack it, we need to be with it, we need to reflect on it and to avoid the usual distractions from it.
Them, and only then, can we authentically, truthfully, realistically make a really informered decision about what comes next. The solution may be grand or small, but if it is informed and apt then it will be effective.
Well worth sitting with it if in the long run the solution generated is the right one.
