So what is empathy? What it is not is sympathy. Empathy is not feeling sorry for people. Empathy is the desire and ability to understand how THEY are experiencing things. Empathy is the ability to actually step out of your own shoes and do your damnedest to step into those shoes of someone else. It is the work put in to see things through the same lens they see the world through.

Empathy means challenging your assumptions. It means asking ‘stupid’ questions. It means being willing to put yourself aside in order that you can allow another’s ‘reality’, and their needs take precedence for a while. It means being secure enough in yourself to be open to another’s way. It means being humble enough to hear others truth & to learn from that.

Leadership Coaching: Empathy

When you have the ability to empathise with others and relate to their way of seeing the world, then you have already established the connection. Once you are connected then you care. Once you care you are caught in the loop of mutual appreciation. Once you have appreciation then it is natural to share inspirations and to want to empower each other’s professional lives.

What this desire to empower others does is it takes all the competition away… To be working together as opposed to pulling apart by comparison and competition is THE most powerful way of achieving anything
