Leadership Coaching: Freedom. If you are in a leadership role and it feels toxic, remember you really can still leave. If you are feeling unhappy, you can actually go. Whether you were the founder, or are a partner, if it was your idea, to begin with, but it has all turned to sh*t, remember you can just step down.
Finding yourself in a position of authority doesn’t mean that you are shackled for life. Entropy is a natural process. Things need to break down before they can rebuild. If you have no passion for seeing that cycle through to the end once again… you can step away.
There will likely be a series of emotions and questions: Did I fail? Should I do more? Is it my responsibility to make it work? The short answer is “No”. if it is no longer working for you, the chances are that ‘it’ (the project, team, business) also might need new energy injected into it from a different source. There might be a grieving process…. loss, self-blame, depression as you make peace with your decision. This is natural. It is also a short term experience.
Once you know it is time and you are resolute about stepping away, I can guarantee that you will feel better. Freed… your energy will rise, your perspective change. You can harness all you learned and take it elsewhere. Who knows what will arise from this decision. All things are possible once you have extricated your energy and your conscience from an endeavor that no longer serves you.
You are free to go!
