Have You Found Your Leadership Potential?
I have a mentor who consistently reminds me that “leaders exist at all levels of an organisation.” And thus it is not just those at the top, with the official mandate and the high wage, who have power and leadership potential.
I remember being shy at school even then I could see there were individuals who held power not by “power-over.” These were neither the teachers nor the bullies, these were the students who had some kind of magnetism. These were the students who stood right IN their power.
Now I know that magnetism often stems from an individuals confidence. Confidence in themselves? Perhaps. More often they have a confidence in their actions and their purpose, their mission. I was always bamboozled by these people because they seemed so unapproachable. Not because they were frightening in any way, but because I could not comprehend their focus or their lack of need. I believe these people were actually those who were just busy doing their ‘thing’, and, in doing so, got joined by others who believed that ‘thing’ was a good idea too.
Leadership Potential
I realise now that these people were those stood right in their power. Therefore these people did not need to play power games with anyone. These people are leaders, not because they seek a leadership role, but because they magnetise others by their focus and purpose and passion.
Decades on and I encounter this sense of authority daily in those I work with. These are not individuals who never encounter quandaries or questions or challenges or disaster. These people simply remain focused on their purpose and thus, remain on track. These people have become knowledgeable of their sector yet remain curious in their purpose. Such open curiosity leads to exploration and such adventures are very inviting.
Having refined my own purpose. I too ‘know’ this focus, determination and open curiosity from the inside. The feelings of frustration of being told ‘that’s not possible’ of my business idea. To feelings of wonderment and awe when it proves itself that it IS. The focus in this work is not about me and is almost not of me. This mission has a life-force of its own. I turn around a realise that others are following me…
