Career Coach vs Mentor – What’s The Difference?
Career Coach vs Mentor – What’s The Difference? — On the outside, the difference between a career coach and a mentor is plain. — A Career Coach “enables you to find your own answers” and A Mentor “tells you what to do”. — And, in order for those two things to happen. A Career Coach needs to be Sector Agnostic and A Mentor needs to be Industry Specific because, they have guidance directly linked to your role or sector.
.
“Let’s break this cycle of shame that so many of us carry.”
HOWEVER, it is never that simple. As a career coach I might ‘tell you what to do’ or, at the very least offer up guidance. Because even though my roles, past an present, may well have been widely different from yours, — my experiences, quandaries, my doubts about my capabilities may well have alignment with your current dilemmas
In which case why would I not share what I have learned????
Also, because I work cross sector, I see the similarities between these parallel universes. We are ALL working with humans, in the same kind of systems, sometimes the language is different but, the challenges are EXACTLY the same. — The problem with our reductionist perspective is we can feel isolated, alone, like we are the only ones facing the problems, doubts, challenges and changes — then we cast ourselves into a position of having to handle them on our own.
Career Coach vs Mentor – What’s The Difference?
Nope! Don’t do that to yourself, please.
My favourite work is the kind where I get to coach people and see them located within the systems they live, work and love AND, I get to see that none of us is so very different after all.
Let’s not carry it alone.
If you need Industry Specific advice – DO get a mentor. If you need Cross Sector wisdom – DO get a Coach — Let’s break this cycle of shame that so many of us carry. Get A Coach, get A Mentor, allow yourself to be “seen” and let the shame dissolve.
