Career Objective Statement

Career Objective Statement: Your career objective really does need to make a strong statement. If you take a look at the 100 example listed, you will see there is very little room for doubt in any of them.

In order to generate an equally strong career objective statement, you will need real clarity. You will need real clarity about what it is that the hiring organisation seeks and also real clarity regarding exactly what you can provide. Most importantly, whilst this would never never be outlined on the CV you submit, you need to have real clarity regarding the professional identity you seek.

How do you define the professional identity you seek? Firstly you make a list of all the identities and roles you already have. Whether these are in a work context or outside in the rest of your life, make a list. You might be mother, daughter, lover, friend… you might be project manager and administrator and creative and a communicator….

When you have expanded these list of roles and professional identities that you have or still do have to about 40 each, you will begin to see that none are incompatible with another. We move fluidly between differing roles and facets all the time. You can see also that to have this adaptability is an asset and not a disingenuous trait. Being able to move into the appropriate facet or identity at the right time is a real skill. It is easier to choose to do so when you have explored all that is in your repertoire.

There may we’ll have been roles on the past that you do not wishes to replicate. Name these unwanted aspects and you will know what to watch out for within the hiring remit. Better to recognise it early on and quit before wasting too much time.. Knowing which roles and identities have given you pleasure means you can seek more of that in your next role.

It is easy to write a strong career objective statement when you have identified what you ‘seek more of’ first. If you recognise your identities within the the hiring organisation, then, you will also know what you will be bringing to then. This is the basis of an honest transaction. This self-honesty leads to recognising your professional strengths within. Internal strength leads to the ability to generate a strong external statement. Be Honest: Why make it up when you have access to so many authentic strengths within you already?
