When to Abandon Your Coaching Goals
Coaching Goals: Coaching is a goal oriented process. It is also important however to recognise when the goals you need have changed. In my experience we humans tend to evolve way faster than we expect. Therefore, if we continued to head towards our original destination, we risk atrophying our real possibilities.
It is really important to set your 5 or ten year plan. It is really important also to absolutely give yourself permission to abandon that journey when something calls you in a new direction. Had you not set those coaching goals and formed the that original plan, you would not have created the opportunity to even see that next choice. Nothing has been wasted by doing so.
We need to see these plans and goals as stepping stones. The career for life has gone and we need the agility to respond as we need and not as we ‘should’. Whilst we may be on the receiving end of the judgement of our elders, in whose opinions we are zigzagging around without focus, what we are doing us creating and benefiting from the opportunities. We are managing our own portfolio careers. We are bringing our raised awareness of where our skills meet our chances in the world.

We are bringing our career savvy to our professional development. Career savvy looks very different today from the way it did 20 or 30 years ago. Being career-savvy means being responsive and open to opportunities. We need to be confident in our abilities and agile enough to abandon The Plan’. This way we are free to move with the chances that present themselves. We need to grasp these gifts them with both hands and see where they lead.

Clients inevitably arrive before me saying something akin to: “I don’t know where I’m going on my career’. We can certainly collaborate to pull the threads together to form your plan. What I cannot guarantee is when you are half way through implementing your plan, that a whole new universe of opportunity won’t expand before your very eyes…..
