Employment Opportunities: In the current career climate, you need to be creating your own career opportunities. In most sectors, the career for life has long gone. Now we manage our portfolio careers.

In taking charge of our own careers we need to become adept at all the skills a small business requires. We must manage our finances as well our own marketing and publicity. We must have our own training department to manage our CPD. We also need our own product development team in order that the service we offer is the fit for purpose and of the finest quality. We literally need to attend to all theses facets in order to navigate our way though the myriad of choices we need to make in order to do earn your living in a way that suits us.

Attending to these skills, on our own behalf, is hard. Refining these skills on behalf of another’s project is easy. We have less emotional connection with an endeavour that is outside of ourselves. Even if we care deeply doubt another persons project, risk is less high and rejection is less painful. When we do business-like things service of ourselves these can feel painful. If you are northern European, then ‘selling’ yourself might feel arrogant or dangerous.  If you went though university before the rise in tuition fees then you might not have had any assistance in handling these facets on your own behalf.  If you do not become easy with self-promotion and the skills needed to do so, the consequences become increasingly stark: Being overlooked at work breeds resentment.

The most congruent way of overcoming these (natural), resistances is to put yourself in service of a purpose greater then yourself. When you pause and take the time to reflect on the values and beliefs you have about work. When you know what professional identity you have had and the professional identity you seek. When you know the purpose that joins all of these things, THIS is when you are freed to promote yourself. When you know that what you bring to the professional world, serves something that is greater than yourself, it is really easy to promote your own skills towards meeting that end. This purpose is the back up needed in order to create your own employment opportunities.
